ULY’s post below got me looking at small overlap test videos. The way some wheels seem to explode/fracture is fascinating to me. In the case of the Chrysler 200 it also seems a little terrifying for anyone who might be standing nearby.

I dunno, I’d rather be hit by a chunk of the 200's wheel rather than the S90's entire, tire.

Wheel loads are pretty fascinating.

Accord’s battery managed to find its way on the floor. I guess it wont be calling help after that crash.

On the floor, or all over the floor?

Different wheel designs experience different loadings, so it’s just a matter of which wheel the car maker goes for. Also, different trim levels have different wheels.
The only situation I can imagine where this could ever impact a pedestrian bystander is a brick or concrete building corner in a downtown CBD environment, where vehicle speeds tend to be slow and this type of accident relatively unlikely.
